Important disclaimers

  • This calculator is provided for informational and educational purposes only and does not constitute tax, legal, accounting, or financial advice.
  • Results are estimates based solely on the information entered and assumptions used by the calculator. Actual contribution limits may vary based on plan documents, compensation definitions, and IRS rules.
  • Plan eligibility, employee coverage requirements, top-heavy rules, and state tax treatment are not determined by this tool.
  • Plan compensation for a self-employed owner is net profit minus the deductible half of self-employment tax. The 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax is not part of that deduction.
  • The Roth catch-up rule, in effect for 2026, requires catch-up contributions to be Roth when prior-year FICA wages from the sponsoring employer exceed $150,000. Schedule C income is not FICA wages, so a sole proprietor with no W-2 wages is not subject to it.
  • This estimate assumes no non-spouse employee meets plan eligibility. Elective deferrals generally must be elected by December 31. A sole proprietor who adopts a new plan can make the first-year deferral up to the filing deadline without extensions (SECURE 2.0 section 317).
